One of the first lessons you learn in video production is the Rule of Thirds. The Rule of Thirds divides an image into nine equal parts using two horizontal lines and two vertical lines, like a grid. Key elements of the scene are placed along these lines to create balance and guide the viewer’s eye. That’s why people are often on the left or right side of the screen in movies and videos. But the Rule of Thirds doesn’t mean you have to stay on those lines, and it certainly doesn’t mean your image looks bad if you don’t follow that rule.
It’s helpful to know the rules, but that doesn’t mean you should be afraid to bend them. Combining industry knowledge with an outlook for the new or unusual helps keeps ideas fresh and exciting.
